1. A water filter comprising: a. a porous support characterized by a mean porosity in the range of 20 to 50% and a mean pore size of 2 to 5 .mu.m; and b. at least one membrane comprising a carbon filter medium disposed on a surface of said support, said carbon filter medium characterized by a mean particle size of no more than 50 .mu.m, said membrane characterized by a mean pore size of no more than 7.2 .mu.m. 2. A water filter in accordance with claim 1 wherein said membrane is further characterized by a mean porosity of no more than 50%. 3. A water filter in accordance with claim 1 wherein said carbon filter medium is further characterized by a mean particle size of no more than 35 .mu.m, and wherein said membrane is further characterized by a mean pore size of no more than 5 .mu.m. 4. A water filter in accordance with claim 1 wherein said carbon filter medium is further characterized by a mean particle size of no more than 21 .mu.m, and wherein said membrane is further characterized by a mean pore size of no more than 3 .mu.m. 5. A water filter in accordance with claim 4 wherein said membrane is further characterized by a mean porosity of no more than 30%. 6. A water filter in accordance with claim 1 wherein said carbon filter medium is further characterized by a mean particle size of no more than 7 .mu.m, and wherein said membrane is further characterized by a mean pore size of no more than 1 .mu.m. 7. A water filter in accordance with claim 6 wherein said membrane is further characterized by a mean porosity of no more than 20%. 8. A water filter in accordance with claim 1 wherein said carbon filter medium is further characterized by a mean particle size of no more than no more than 3.5 .mu.m, and wherein said membrane is further characterized by a mean pore size of no more than 0.5 .mu.m. 9. A water filter in accordance with claim 8 wherein said membrane is further characterized by a mean porosity of no more than 10%. 10. A water filter in accordance with claim 1 wherein said membrane is in contact with said surface of said support. 11. A water filter in accordance with claim 1 wherein said support is tubular. 12. A water filter comprising: a. a porous support characterized by a mean porosity in the range of 20 to 50% and a mean pore size of 2 to 5 .mu.m; and b. a membrane comprising a carbon filter medium disposed on and in contact with a surface of said support, said carbon filter medium characterized by a mean particle size in the range of 7 to 21 .mu.m, said membrane characterized by a mean pore size in the range of 1 to 3 .mu.m and a mean porosity in the range of 10 to 30%. 13. A water filter in accordance with claim 12 wherein said membrane is a first membrane, wherein said carbon filter medium is a first carbon filter medium, and further comprising a second membrane comprising a second carbon filter medium disposed on and in contact with a surface of said first membrane, said second carbon filter medium characterized by a mean particle size in the range of 3.5 to 7 .mu.m, said second membrane characterized by a mean pore size in the range of 0.5 to 1 .mu.m and a mean porosity in the range of 5 to 20%. 14. A water filter in accordance with claim 13 further comprising a third membrane comprising a third carbon filter medium disposed on and in contact with a surface of said second membrane, said third carbon filter medium characterized by a mean particle size of <3.5 .mu.m, said third membrane characterized by a mean pore size of <0.5 .mu.m and a mean porosity in the range of 3 to 10%. 15. A water filtration system comprising: a. a water filter comprising a porous support characterized by a mean porosity in the range of 20 to 50% and a mean pore size of 2 to 5 .mu.m; b. at least one membrane comprising a carbon filter medium disposed on a surface of said support, said carbon filter medium characterized by a mean particle size of no more than 50 .mu.m, said membrane characterized by a mean pore size of no more than 7.2 .mu.m; c. means for directing water into said filter; and d. means for purging said water filter. 16. A water filtration system in accordance with claim 15 wherein said membrane is further characterized by a mean porosity of no more than 50%. 17. A water filtration system in accordance with claim 15 wherein said carbon filter medium is further characterized by a mean particle size of no more than 35 .mu.m, and wherein said membrane is further characterized by a mean pore size of no more than 5 .mu.m. 18. A water filtration system in accordance with claim 15 wherein said carbon filter medium is further characterized by a mean particle size of no more than 21 .mu.m, and wherein said membrane is further characterized by a mean pore size of no more than 3 .mu.m. 19. A water filtration system in accordance with claim 18 wherein said membrane is further characterized by a mean porosity of no more than 30%. 20. A water filtration system in accordance with claim 15 wherein said carbon filter medium is further characterized by a mean particle size of no more than 7 .mu.m, and wherein said membrane is further characterized by a mean pore size of no more than 1 .mu.m. 21. A water filtration system in accordance with claim 20 wherein said membrane is further characterized by a mean porosity of no more than 20%. 22. A water filtration system in accordance with claim 15 wherein said carbon filter medium is further characterized by a mean particle size of no more than no more than 3.5 .mu.m, and wherein said membrane is further characterized by a mean pore size of no more than 0.5 .mu.m. 23. A water filtration system in accordance with claim 22 wherein said membrane is further characterized by a mean porosity of no more than 10%. 24. A water filtration system in accordance with claim 15 wherein said membrane is in contact with said surface of said support. 25. A water filtration system in accordance with claim 15 wherein said support is tubular. 26. A water filtration system comprising: a. a water filter comprising porous support characterized by a mean porosity in the range of 20 to 50% and a mean pore size of 2 to 5 .mu.m; b. a membrane comprising a carbon filter medium disposed on and in contact with a surface of said support, said carbon filter medium characterized by a mean particle size in the range of 7 to 21 .mu.m, said membrane characterized by a mean pore size in the range of 1 to 3 .mu.m and a mean porosity in the range of 10 to 30%; c. means for directing water into said filter; and d. means for purging said water filter. 27. A water filtration system in accordance with claim 26 wherein said membrane is a first membrane, wherein said carbon filter medium is a first carbon filter medium, and further comprising a second membrane comprising a second carbon filter medium disposed on and in contact with a surface of said first membrane, said second carbon filter medium characterized by a mean particle size in the range of 3.5 to 7 .mu.m, said second membrane characterized by a mean pore size in the range of 0.5 to 1 .mu.m and a mean porosity in the range of 5 to 20%. 28. A water filtration system in accordance with claim 27 further comprising a third membrane comprising a third carbon filter medium disposed on and in contact with a surface of said second membrane, said third carbon filter medium characterized by a mean particle size of <3.5 .mu.m, said third membrane characterized by a mean pore size of <0.5 .mu.m and a mean porosity in the range of 3 to 10%. |
